Since XI Pro was released over two years ago this hints at a mature product with little in the way of useful features still to be added. Somewhat unusually, then, one feature is in the process of being withdrawn: integration with Forms Central. This was a subscription-based service for the creation and management of online forms. Adobe says this is being retired due to lack of support and to allow the company to concentrate on mainstream PDF creation.

Although weve referred to Adobe Acrobat XI Pro as a PDF Editor, as with most packages it also allows you to create the file in the first place. This is achieved in two ways. First theirs a print driver so you can print a document, as you would to a real printer, but the end result is the creation of a PDF file.

Second, additional toolbars are added to Microsoft Office applications and creating a PDF this way offers several addition features such as combining multiple Office documents into a single PDF, preserving links, mail merging and more.

In terms of the advanced features that are found in professional PDF editors, XI Pro support digital signatures that add a graphical representation of your signature; ID certification that allows a recipient to verity that a PDF really came from you and hasn't subsequently been altered; a means by which several authors can review a document and add their comments; and the ability to create forms that can then be filled in within the document.

Adobe-Acrobat XI Pro review 
Editing features are extensive and easy to use. In addition to editing text in a line, you can add, move, and resize text blocks and images, and change fonts attributes. Acrobat XI Pro doesn't have all of InDesign's precise text adjustments, but it does offer vertical and horizontal line spacing and basic character spacing. You can find and replace text but not replace all instances in one fell swoop. Because of the PDF format, though, and in common with all PDF editors, text with advanced formatting may be presented in boxes with no text wrapping to the next box. This means that while minor edits can be carried out with ease, carrying out major amendments to a PDF file isn't feasible if the document has a lot of sophisticated formatting.

Acrobat XI Pro's interface looks very much the same as it did in the previous version, though you can create and save custom tool sets and export them. You can download custom tool sets that others have created, too.

Acrobat XI Pro's merging capabilities are good, too. You see a preview of most documents and can rearrange them in a scalable icon view, see what every page of each document looks like and set which pages of a document are included in the final exported file. You can also transform PDFs into editable Microsoft PowerPoint presentations.

PDF Editing
For years, I’ve been saying that PDF is primarily an archive format, but Acrobat XI makes it easy to make significant text and graphic edits to PDFs. Text wraps when you edit it and you can easily replace images. You can even add to a bullet list and search and replace text. The redesigned Content Editing panel (see below) makes the process easy to understand.

 

1. Easier PDF/A Conformance
   Acrobat XI can convert just about any existing PDF to PDF/A. If the regular conversion steps fail, Acrobat XI can reconvert the file via PostScript (e.g. automatically print to the AdobePDF printer) or rasterize pages as necessary to bring the file into compliance.

2. Save PDF to PowerPoint
   When I tried this feature, it floored me! Acrobat can convert PDFs to editable PowerPoint files complete with backgrounds, artwork, and bulleted text.
    
3. Redesigned Combine Panel
   The Combine documents experience in Acrobat XI is much improved. You can visually swap in pages, change order, and see thumbnails of existing files. Acrobat XI Combine works better on the Mac than previous versions. Mac users now can see thumbnails and convert Office file types, too. You still need to have Microsoft Office on your computer, of course.
   
4. FormsCentral
   Acrobat has long had tools to create forms, but the process involved creating an original file in another program and then laying form fields on top of the PDF later. Acrobat XI includes FormsCentral, a new standalone tool that allows you to create both PDF and web forms and collect the data. FormsCentral includes a nice library of pre-built forms to get you started.
   
5. WebMail Support
   Use Yahoo or Gmail? You can now send email directly from the File menu in Acrobat (File> Send File . . .). You can configure multiple email accounts, too, and set the default mailer.
   
6. Create PDF and Run Action
   You can now run an Action directly from a file in Microsoft Office. For example, you might convert a contract to PDF then automatically show the Bookmarks panel and password protect the file.
   
7. Easy Signature Workflows
   Acrobat now allows you to easily sign a document by typing your name, drawing your signature or using a signature stamp. You can then easily add your signature to any document or even send it for additional signatures using Adobe’s EchoSign eSignature service.
   
8. Restrict Editing Easily
   With Acrobat’s new ability to edit PDF, you may wish to protect the important documents you share. Acrobat XI includes new, easier single-step method to add this restriction.
   
9. Customize Panel Toolset
   Sometimes you just need the tools you use everyday available where you want them! Acrobat XI allows you to create your own custom Toolset with just the tools you need. From a single customization window, you can create your own panel and Quick Tools (toolbar icons).
